Are you looking for outdoor senior picture poses for guys? Well, you have come to the right spot! As most of you know, guys just hate taking pictures most of the time... Most of my guy clients tend to like being outdoors and that is completely fine with me. Being a professional photographer for over 12 years now, I have tons of outdoor ideas and locations with creative poses just for guys. I have studio located right here in Central Mississippi, with tons of outdoor locations. Open fields, barns, trees, water, lakes, dirt roads, and the list could keep going. Although, I try my hardest to make it fun and to make them laugh so that I can capture the best smiles for mom, I don't make them do the cheese smile over and over, I would much rather them be natural. I honestly don't know many guys that walk around with a smile on their face all day long.
Meet Justin and Tide (his puppy), he is my outdoor senior guy session we will be talking about. Justin Bell is from Mendenhall, which is right here in central Mississippi. He is my kinda guy, simple! He is not the dress up type or even the button up style kind. Which is just fine with me. As I have said before I want them to be theirselves and comfortable. Justin's mom literally called me the morning of his session unprepared and ready to choke him, when she found out none of his jeans were picture worthy. After a few moments I walked her through some ideas and she ran to a local store/boutique that we have here in Magee, Ms, The Hair Bar Salon and Boutique. She was able to find him a few shirts to wear that made him feel like himself. Nice t-shirts are ok and that is just what he wore with nice blue jeans.
Outdoor senior guy portraits doesn't have to be hard just needs to be creative to capture timeless memories. No hiking is required. lol... Whether you're taking Indoor or outdoor senior pictures because your mom signed you up, or you want to take senior pictures we'll create a senior experience that's enjoyable and memorable. My focus is on you and taking pictures that stop time by showing who you've become as you approach the milestone of graduation! How exciting!
Here are a few tips for senior guys and posing them outdoors. First in my questionnaire I ask, what are some of their hobbies? Justin's answer was spending time with his dog while riding around in his truck. I find that clients, just as Justin are more comfortable when other are not watching, or when they have more of a natural pose and walk into it. I always try and guide them with words but most of the time I show them and pose also. So, I send him and Tide to my barn that is behind my studio, here in Mendenhall, Ms. Just as pups do off to running around and smelling everything, I had Justin to just lean against the barn. Then having them sit and look isn't a hard task most the time. lol. I feel in love with his ears, Tide's that is. I love more of a natural pose of my guys leaning or standing and propped up. I always tell them if it bends bend it... Thumb in their pocket for standing poses and bend down and turn their knees away from me. I am always so talkative with them. lol. I take time to get to know them and help them open up and feel mote comfortable during their session. I helps senior guys pose natural.
Next we used my steps. (Which is actually my bow hunting stand lol, hey it works). Its a simple outdoor poses but here we are able to grab several basic sitting poses and crops. We moved on over to my brick wall. Sitting on the ground with knees up, arms wrapping them, to just a different angle of the camera to shoot over him. Here again I had him lean against the wall back flat, arm up and a side profile. Oh, and let us NOT forget the truck shots. I took him to a area with wild grass and had him back in there to have a different view angle. Bent down, arms crossed, and sitting in the back even with Tide pod as I called him. We jumped in his truck and took a ride. Just down the road to where they were logging timber. This just so happened to be my favorite shots. I jumped on top of a pile of logging logs and had him sit lower with one leg up and one hanging over, to create an alternate angle to add interest and focus on his simple smile. The last stop we made was just over a bridge on a side road. I always capture the best smiles there because it never fells someone hits the horn a few times and they laugh. Leaning on the bridge rail, sitting on the side and a wide stance in the middle of the road shows just how tall they are.
These are all basic and simple outdoor senior picture poses for guys but I have used several with my girls. The main focus of mine is having them to look comfortable. Being outside in Central Mississippi sometimes can be tricky. I always ask do they sweat terrible. Sometimes it is just to HOT at my normal shooting times, so I schedule them a little later in the day so we are not a hot sweaty mess, sometimes we just bend the rules.
The things to remember with guys is let them guide you into what is comfortable for them. Most of senior guys know what a hind catcher pose is and I call it the money pose. Mom's love this pose every time. Its such a classic pose for guys. Sitting poses are tough, just because most guys crunch up and not lean over. Remember with their trucks. They don't always just have to be them leaning over their hood. Work yourself all the way around the vehicle. Another tip I have learned, if you watch them closely most guys have a signature pose that they just fall into, capture that. My number one goal is to capture moments for mom/dad/grandma, to have wall art displayed in their homes, so if my guys aren't feeling it I do my best to loosen them up by making it short and sweet, not overloading them with to many poses or instructions. I allow them to be comfortable and have fun.
I hope I did not overwhelm you with all these tips but being a boy mom I think it just comes easy for me. All of the guys always end up telling me, it wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. Most moms don't even come with them. They trust me! Or they have even have just heard too...
