Best Newborn and Sibling photography ideas...
How in the world are we going to get them in a picture together? This happens to be the first question every new mom that has an older sibling ask me. Trust me, we are working on their time and it takes a lot of patients. and a lot of them! Let's get creative and let me share some of the best newborn and sibling ideas that I have used. Let me not forget treats, photoshop and tricks. I always want my babies safe, no mater what! So if that sibling just isn't feeling the newbie in town, DON'T STRESS! This is why you hired me as your newborn photographer. Each session is different, as well as each child is too. I do my best to build trust with the older sibling to make it fun for them. All of this is new to them. For Oh so long it was just about them now they have to share which is just NO fun. They just want to feel important too. I want them to look back in time just as my parents will and think about how loving they look.
I am just throwing it out here, real for you... (you all should know me by now, I am real)
Screaming, treating and spanking just does not work. It gets them upset, makes their face red, and then they don't like coming/going to take pictures. Don't even drop your mouth like you think it doesn't happen. Yep! It does. It's true! Mom just wants that one picture and Dad is over picture taking. Allow me to tell you as a thirteen year newborn photographer, Let me help! They maybe are just afraid or shy at first but I have been doing this for years. I have tricks up my sleeve, some work and some don't. It takes TIME, PATIENTS, SNACKS and sometimes PHOTOSHOP! Don't think for a second each session is perfect and each sibling sits down and holds the baby perfectly...
As always, a spotter should be able to keep their hand on the baby if baby is posed on or in a prop and, once baby is secure, only lift their hand for the couple of seconds it takes the photographer to create the image. Then again, we have those older siblings that are in love with "their" baby and will pose perfectly. Each session is different! Let me not forget to add I work with them but around them! If they are happy and just walk in a portrait we take that chance. But I have also photoshopped a baby into a empty bucket or a parent out of an image plenty of times. It is all about safe poses and ideas that create a story about this precious time happing in your life. Sometimes, just taking a break and walking outside to grab a fresh air helps them. I always suggest bring their favorite treat or toy. Outside my studio they have an area to just walk, run or just swing it out. lol.
Here is a tip that helps too before our session. Hyping them up and getting them excited way before their session always helps too. But PLEASE include them, let them miss school, let them be a part, and we will pray for the best. I also have a TV that most the time helps.
Also, while Im on it. Make sure to include yourself. Family portraits are the only thing we hold on to, and we are not promised tomorrow so just suck it up and do it. I promise you they will not talk about how your ruts are not done and that weight you haven't lost looks. Those will not be the things they think about.
Below I have added images of the best newborn poses with all age siblings that I have taken here in my studio in Mendenhall, Mississippi. I hope that this gives you a better idea of how it all works. I would love to answer any questions! Message me Brandy@photosbybstuart.com
